Trains to Blackburn

Blackburn and Preston Railway opened Blackburn station in 1846; although the current buildings were built in the 1880s. For decades, two large train sheds covered the platforms, but they were removed in 2000. As part of these refurbishments, artist Stephen Charnock was invited to create, for platform 4, a piece of artwork, which became a stainless-steel screen featuring the faces of people important to the story of Blackburn. The station stands between the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and the town centre, a physical representation of how the railways usurped the waterways during the Industrial Revolution. During that time, Blackburn grew dramatically on the back of the textile industry, and many of the grand buildings in the town centre date back to those years of prosperity. The Blackburn Visitor Centre is in The Mall shopping centre, a short walk along Railway Road from the station, past Blackburn Cathedral.
