Located on the London Underground's most heavily travelled section of track, Barbican Railway Station is a tube station served by the Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines in the Travelcard Zone 1. The station lies in a cutting with cut-and-cover tunnels on either end, leaving much of the station exposed to the elements. Barbican is a main stop for passengers seeking the Barbican Estate, Barbican Centre, St Bartholomew the Great, St Bart's Hospital, the Museum of London, and Smithfield. It is also a short walk from St Paul's Cathedral.

A historic station, Barbican (then called Aldersgate & Barbican) suffered severe damage during the Blitz, resulting in the demolition of the original station in favour of the present structure. All three London Underground lines calling at Barbican share the same track from Baker Street junction. On the Circle line, trains to Barbican call six times an hour clockwise via Liverpool Street/Tower Hill and six times anticlockwise via Kings Cross St Pancras and Paddington; six an hour eastbound to Barking and westbound to Hammersmith via Paddington on the Hammersmith & City line; and a variety of express, semi-fast, and all-stations services along the Metropolitan line with a minimum off-peak schedule of 12 trains eastbound and 12 westbound divided between Amersham, Chesham, and Uxbridge. London buses 4, 56, and 153 serve the station. Oyster card top-up machines are available in the ticket hall.
