On timetables or tickets, you might see this station referred to as Ashford (Surrey) or Ashford (Middlesex) to distinguish it from Ashford International in Kent. While these days it’s officially in the county of Surrey, before 1965, it was in the now-dissolved county of Middlesex, and old habits die hard. On the Waterloo-to-Reading line, as it is, direct trains run through Ashford to and from Windsor & Eton Riverside and Weybridge. Staines, the next station westbound, connects with services to Reading. Feltham, the next station eastbound, connects with faster services into the capital. The station itself is right on Church Road, the main street in Ashford, where you’ll find all of the local businesses you’d expect – banks, bakeries, hairdressers, florists, cafés – plus several supermarkets and a library. It’s about four miles to the M25 and six to the M3.
