Trains to Northumberland Park
Getting the train to Northumberland National Park isn't just the practical choice - it's the picturesque one too. The Tyne Valley line between Newcastle and Carlisle weaves its way to the south of the park, with stops at Haltwhistle, Bardon Mill, Haydon Bridge and Hexham. And the East Coast Main Line offers fantastic views of the Northumbrian coast, with services between London, Newcastle and Edinburgh stopping at Alnmouth, from where you can travel west into the park.
About Northumberland Park
The Northumberland National Park consists of 400 square miles of tranquil wilderness in the far north of England, between Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish border. It's the least populated of Britain's national parks - with just 2,000 people living within the park boundaries, you get even more of that spectacular natural beauty to yourself. So it you're really looking to get away from it all, a rail break to Northumberland could be just the thing. What to see? Try exploring the unspoilt countryside of the College Valley, or taking a walk through the Cheviot or Simonside Hills head to visitnorthumberland.com for more information.
If you're very lucky you might even spot some of the park's rare wildlife, which includes skylarks, red squirrels and otters. History fans can step back to Roman times along the Hadrian's Wall Path, or find out about the park's more recent past at the World War I training trenches, which are on Ministry of Defence land and occasionally open to the public. Northumberland National Park isn't just a fantastic place to enjoy during the daytime, it's also an attraction after dark. Since 2013 it has been home to Europe's largest area of protected night sky, thanks to its designation as an International Dark Sky Park - an area where people can stargaze without the negative effects of light pollution. Keep an eye out for regular events held to coincide with meteor showers and other cosmic happenings.
