The distinctive white station buildings of Warminster station were built in 1851, when the Great Western Railway arrived in the town. Then, as now, trains to Warminster included the service to and from Westbury, a line which was soon extended to Salisbury. Today the station is on the Wessex Main Line, with regular services to Bristol, Cardiff, Southampton and Portsmouth, with a more infrequent service during the week to London Waterloo.
Warminster owes its original prosperity - and many buildings in the town centre - to the days of the corn market. That is long gone, but Market Place and the High Street remain the focal point for activities in the town, with many shops, pubs and restaurants, and the Athenaeum theatre and cinema. Travellers to Warminster emerge from the station onto Station Road, along which it is a five-minute walk to Market Place. Warminster is also the closest station to Longleat Safari Park.
