The arrival of the railway to Urmston in 1873 began the transformation of the area from a small rural community into a well-to-do commuter town. Manchester city centre is about six miles away to the north east, and there are trains to Manchester Oxford Road every half hour with a journey time of about 15 minutes. There are also half-hourly services in the other direction towards Liverpool Lime Street, taking an hour.
As you arrive at Urmston station, keep an eye out for The Steamhouse pub right on platform 2, which was the original Victorian ticket office. The main shopping streets are a couple of minutes' walk across Flixton Road. About 1.5 miles to the north of the station is junction 10 of the M60, with the Trafford Centre shopping mall and Event City. To the south of the town, the River Mersey meanders its way along, with the green expanse of Urmston Meadows nearby.
