St Albans Abbey railway station lies just outside the centre of St Albans in Hertfordshire and serves as the terminus for trains travelling along the Abbey Line. It was opened in the mid-19th century by the then London and North Western Railway with plans to extend the line further north, but this never came to fruition. In the mid 1920s, the word ‘Abbey’ was added to the name to avoid confusion with the other station. Today, the single-platform station is managed by London Northwestern Railway and serves around 150,000 passengers annually. It’s an unstaffed station, though there are self-service machines for purchasing tickets before boarding the train. There is an irregular hourly direct service to Watford Junction in 16 minutes.

St Albans is one of the country’s most scenic towns and you’ll find plenty to do when you step off at the station. You’ll be within walking distance of several parks including the vast Verulamium Park and the pretty Tiberius Square. If you have some time, walk a little north to see the historical 15th-century clock tower and look out over the city from its 93-step-high viewing area.
