Shotts railway station is used by Shotts, a little town roughly half way between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was opened in the second half of the 19th century by the then Caledonian Railway along the Cleand and Midcalder Line. The two-platform station, now managed by Abellio ScotRail, might look small, but it serves more than 200,000 passengers annually. There’s a ticket office open until the early afternoons Monday to Saturday. Outside these hours, passengers are required to buy their tickets in advance or using the station’s self-service machines. There’s a train every 30 minutes during peak hours to Glasgow Central taking 1 hour 21 minutes and eastbound to Edinburgh in 1 hour 42 minutes.

It might be small, but there’s several things that make a trip to Shotts worthwhile. If you’re interested in history, don’t miss catching a glimpse of the old brick ironworks. Alternatively, take your clubs up to swing them along the challenging fairways dotted with sandy bunkers.
