Sheffield station dates back to 1870 when the city was at the height of its powers as a world-famous producer of steel and high-quality cutlery. Today the city boasts two major universities, excellent sporting facilities – including an Olympic-size pool at the Ponds Forge centre – and a beautiful setting on the edge of the Peak District.

Sheffield train station has expanded beyond recognition, but traces of the original still exist between platforms two and five. So too does the elegant stone façade, added in 1905. The station looks out onto Sheaf Square, a wide plaza with a cascading foundation and steel sculpture that reference the city’s rivers and its metalworking tradition.

The station is at the foot of a hill to the east of the city centre, and the walk into town takes you past Sheffield Hallam University, the Millennium Gallery – home to a fascinating collection of Sheffield steel – and the Winter Gardens, a peaceful public conservatory in the heart of the city.
