It was the railway that transformed Rugby from a quiet market town to a major industrial centre in the 19th century, and much of the architecture of the town centre comes from the Victoria era. Trains to Rugby travel on the West Coast Main Line, and arrive at the town about twenty minutes' walk - or ten minutes by bus - from the main shopping area on the streets around the Clock Tower, where you will also find a regular market.
Rugby is most famous for the sport that bears its name. Rugby Football was invented at Rugby School by William Webb Ellis, and the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum tells the story of the sport. The school is just to the south of the town centre, and you can visit The Close on the school grounds to see where it all began. Look out for the bronze statue of the former pupil who made history in 1823.
