Preston station first opened in 1838, and by the 1860s its location had made it a popular pit stop for Londoners travelling to Scotland – hungry passengers would hop out to restore themselves at the station's dining room. Food continued to play a big part in the station's history, with the Free Buffet Association feeding servicemen 24 hours a day during the First World War. If you have time, visit the waiting room on platform three, where you'll find a plaque that marks where the buffet once stood.

Today, trains to Preston arrive at an elegant 19th-century building in the heart of the city, close to the mix of big-name and independent stores on Fishergate. Look out for the beautiful Victorian-era Miller Arcade and behind it the Harris Museum and Art Gallery. Or, for a break from the shops, head to the Avenham and Miller parks on the bank of the River Ribble.
