Newton-le-Willows station opened in 1861, and it is located in the borough of St Helens on the former Liverpool and Manchester Railway - one of the oldest lines in the country. Today some of its busiest services are the hourly trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport, travelling via Manchester Piccadilly. Other services include trains to Manchester Victoria and Chester, and to Llandudno and Holyhead on the North Wales Coast Line.
The centre of Newton-le-Willows is actually closer to the nearby Earlestown station, which is located at the bottom of Market Street in the west of town. Newton-le-Willows station serves the residential neighbourhoods in the eastern part of town, where some shops, pubs and other services can be found on the High Street, about five minutes' walk to the north. Newton-le-Willows station is also the closest train connection for Haydock Park racecourse, and there is a shuttle bus service linking the two on race weekends.
