Musselburgh is a reasonably young station, but replaced an older one – it opened in 1988, some 24 years after the original station serving the town closed. It is situated on the North Berwick Line, which connects Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central, and Ayr in the west to North Berwick and Dunbar in the east. Musselburgh station is one of two serving the town, alongside Wallyford to the east.
Musselburgh High Street is on the eastern side of the River Esk, about a mile from the station. It has a good range of shops, restaurants and cafes, and leads to the town’s historic racecourse. The walk takes about half an hour, passing through residential streets, across Haugh Park, and along the river. There are also regular bus services linking the station to the High Street, as well as to the promenade and harbour to the west of the town centre. Directly south of the station is the campus of the Queen Margaret University.
