As one of England's oldest seaside resorts, Margate has attracted visitors to its golden sands for over 250 years. The railway from London reached the town in 1863, and the current Margate train station was designed by Maxwell Fry, the architect of three neo-classical stations for Southern Railways in the mid-1920s.

Today, visitors emerge from Fry's building to a view of the water and the wide expanse of Margate Sands, and the walk along the seafront takes in the Jubilee Clock Tower and the Marine Gardens. The main attractions of the town are within a short walk of the station. The legendary Dreamland theme park and its Scenic Railway rollercoaster – the oldest in Britain – reopened in 2015. Across the beach from the theme park is the Turner Contemporary art gallery, designed by David Chipperfield. Between the two, the streets around Margate Old Town Square are packed with galleries, cafes, restaurants and shops.
