Maidstone East station is one of three serving Maidstone in Kent, and the only one with a direct service to London. The station lies on the Maidstone East Line south of London Victoria, between Barming and Bearsted.
Opened in 1874, it was originally known simply as Maidstone - which did little to distinguish it from a neighbouring station with exactly the same name. The confusion ended in 1899, when they were dubbed Maidstone East and Maidstone West. Today, the station takes London commuters to Victoria station in just under an hour, with additional local services to Ashford International and Canterbury.
Maidstone town centre is a major regional shopping destination, with over a million square feet of retail space. Much of it is accounted for by the town's two main shopping centres, The Mall Maidstone and Fremlin Walk - the latter is just five minutes' walk south of the station.
