Longbridge station lies about eight miles to the south west of Birmingham city centre on the Cross City Line. The usual daytime service sees trains heading north towards the city, via the university, every ten minutes. There are southbound trains to Redditch every 20 minutes, and three additional trains every hour coming from Birmingham terminate at Longbridge. The journey time to Birmingham New Street is 20 minutes.
The current station was built in 1978, but there was a previous Longbridge station nearby, which served the area from 1915, when the area was on the up as a centre of the British automotive industry, until 1964. These days, Longbridge is an important commuter station used by over three-quarters-of-a-million passengers every year and this looks set to increase as the area is undergoing large-scale redevelopment and regeneration to create a new community with a new town centre and college, homes and offices.
