Trains to Hassocks pass through Sussex's beautiful South Downs, before pulling up in a delightful village on the outskirts of Brighton. Hassocks has rail to thank for its prosperity, as the modern village grew up around the station after the latter was built in 1841. The station's success was fair reward for a monumental effort - in order to take the rail line beyond Hassocks to Brighton, the London & South Coast Railway had to construct the nearby Clayton Railway Tunnel, which took over 6,000 workers and 900 horses to build.
A traditional English village in every way, Hassocks boasts independent shops, strong community centres, four churches, three schools, five pubs, two Post Offices and a library - plus a village market that takes place on the last Saturday of each month. Green space comes in the form of Adastra Park in the centre of the village, containing a cricket and football pitch.
