Trains into Great Yarmouth station ease along the banks of the River Yare. It’s a pleasant way to arrive at this scenic seaside resort, whose 15-mile stretch of sandy beach and east-coast sunshine draw vast numbers of visitors during the holiday season, resulting in the added service of 24 passenger trains every Saturday throughout summer.

The station itself was formerly known as Yarmouth Vauxhall and was opened by the Yarmouth and Norwich Railway in 1844. It was rebuilt in 1960 after extensive damage in WW2.

Not far from the real Great Yarmouth station is Merrivale Model Village, perfect if you prefer your railways dinky. One of Great Yarmouth's most-loved family attractions, the miniature railways boasts 350 metres of track and 28 different locomotives, novelty vehicles and associated rolling stock offering perhaps the easiest afternoon of trainspotting available on Earth. Also on the Golden Mile is the Sea Life Centre, a tropical pool, and the Pleasure Beach, as well as various tearooms with majestic seaside views.

How to get from Great Yarmouth station to the beach

It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Great Yarmouth station to the beach. Head out of the station and turn right onto Acle New Road. Keep walking down this road and onto Priory Plain, then take a left into St Nicholas Road. Keep walking until you see the beach ahead of you.

Great Yarmouth train station has four platforms, all of which can be accessed step-free. There are two entrances, one through the car park leading into the concourse and the other a few yards away with direct access to all four platforms. The large concourse has numerous benches, a cycle rack, ticket desk, baby-changing facilities and toilets. Permit parking is available for the front of the station.
