Farringdon is a mainline and London Underground station in Clerkenwell, on the outskirts of the City of London. It opened in 1863 and served as the final stop on the Metropolitan Line, the world's first underground railway. Look up as you enter the station and note the original signage, which features the station's former name of Farringdon & High Holborn. Mainline passenger trains initially shared the track with freight trains full of livestock destined for Smithfield Market - and, although the cows stopped using the station in the 1920s, the cobbled circular cattle ramp behind the building remains. Today, the station serves a London foodie hotspot, with several notable restaurants - including St. John, the temple of 'nose-to-tail' eating. Just around the corner is Leather Lane food market which serves commuters on weekdays where you’ll find a range of food stalls, gym options and great places to grab a coffee fix. Farringdon sees fewer passengers than many other mainline stations based in the capital, but has a busy future as part of London's east-west Crossrail project, which will see it become a major interchange for Thameslink, Crossrail and London Underground services.

Station details & facilities

There are several entrances to Farringdon station: one on Turnmill Street and two on Cowcross Street. London Underground trains use platforms 1 and 2 - the best entrances for these are Turnmill Street and the north entrance on Cowcross Street. For National Rail services on platform 3 and platform 4, use either of the Cowcross Street entrances (the southern entrance contains the National Rail ticket office). For step-free access, use either Cowcross Street entrance.

Farringdon station is now served by the new Elizabeth line. Check out our dedicated page to Elizabeth line trains for more details.
