Berkhamsted station dates back to 1875 and overlooks the Grand Junction Canal. On the other side of the station are the remains of Berkhamsted Castle, the Norman motte-and-bailey castle where William the Conqueror was officially offered the crown after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Situated on the West Coast Main Line, Berkhamsted is a popular place to live for commuters, with 65% of people living in the area commuting into London to work. That's around 1.5 million passenger journeys a year.
Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, the town attracts visitors to enjoy its open air High Street markets, the renowned Grade II-listed art-deco Rex Cinema and the many opportunities for walking, cycling and exploring in the nearby Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Berkhamsted Waterways Walk offers three circular routes of varying lengths, all originating from Berkhamsted Station. Further afield, Whipsnade Zoo - the UK's biggest zoo - is just over ten miles away.
