Annan train station was originally opened by Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway. It was one of two stations located in Annan – the other one being the now disused Annan Shawhill. Trains from Annan train station depart hourly to Carlisle and Dumfries during the week, with fastest journey times of 22 minutes and 17 minutes respectively. Five trains in each direction run on Sundays. Trains to Glasgow Central take 2 hours and 1 minute.

The old station building, now a restaurant and B&B, dates from 1848. Trains from Annan station were used to deliver fresh fish to London until the 1980s; the town was also a producer of cotton goods and ropes, but the goods yard at the station closed at around the same time. Today, the two platform station has a shelter and seating for passengers, and a footbridge connecting the platforms.

Walkers can access the Annandale way, a 53 mile route which runs from the source of the River Annan to the Solway Firth, south of the town. Visitors to the town also enjoy the Annan Museum, which displays the history of the town, and the local Annandale Distillery which was re-opened in 2014, almost a century after its closure in 1918.
