Accrington station lies on the East Lancashire Line between Preston and Colne. Also calling here are Calder Valley Line services between Blackpool North, York and Leeds. Trains first came to Accrington in 1848, contributing to its growth into a booming Victorian industrial mill town. The railways also played a key part in the success of the nearby brickworks, transporting the famously strong Accrington bricks, which were used to build the foundations of such iconic structures as the Blackpool Tower and the Empire State Building.
Today, arriving by train to Accrington puts you within five-minutes' walk, along Blackburn Road, of the centre of Accrington, with its large shopping centre and thriving indoor and outdoor markets. Visitors also come to the area to make the most of the beautiful landscapes of the Pennines and connect up with the circular Hyndburn Clog long-distance path, which passes the outskirts of the town.
